Gates (Human Design)

The 64 "gates" of the bodygraph — themes inherited from the I Ching's hexagrams, activated by birth data and forming the channels between centers.

Gates are the finest level of detail in a Human Design chart: each of the 64 gates corresponds to one of the 64 hexagrams of the ancient Chinese Book of Changes and carries its own theme — from Gate 1 (creativity) to Gate 64 (confusion before clarity). Gates sit on the nine centers of the bodygraph; when an activated gate connects to an activated gate at the other end of its channel — in your own chart or a partner's — the channel is considered defined and grants a stable trait. Activation is calculated twice — from your birth date (the conscious line) and from a calculation roughly 88 days earlier (the unconscious line) — so on average, each person has about 26 of the 64 gates activated. Unlike type, strategy, and authority, which are worth learning first, gates are a level to explore once the basics have been tested against your own experience: this is where Human Design overlaps most closely with astrology and I Ching symbolism.
