It never does — Earth orbits the sun faster than Mercury, so from our vantage point it briefly appears to drift backward. Same optical trick as a slower car seeming to reverse when you overtake it on the highway.
Everything falls apart during a retrograde.
Studies looking for a spike in accidents, breakups, or IT outages during Mercury retrograde haven't found one. What changes is your attention — you notice, and blame, every small hiccup a little more.
You should freeze every plan until it's over.

The stretch before and after the retrograde itself when Mercury revisits the same zodiac degrees it will cross (or just crossed) while moving backward. Most of what people blame on 'Mercury retrograde' — mix-ups, re-dos — tends to start during the shadow, not just the retrograde weeks.
It's a trick of perspective, not physics. Mercury orbits the sun faster than Earth does, so when it laps us on the inside track, it briefly looks like it's sliding backward against the stars — exactly how a car you're overtaking seems to move in reverse.
