Retrograde Planet

Retrograde motion is a purely optical phenomenon: planets never actually move backward, but because Earth and the other planet orbit at different speeds, a planet can appear to "back up" against the background stars for a while. The best-known case is retrograde Mercury, which happens several times a year and is popularly linked to breakdowns in communication, technology, and paperwork, though these coincidences have no scientific backing and are largely remembered selectively. Symbolically, each retrograde period is read as an invitation to return to and review that planet's domain rather than push forward with something new: retrograde Venus is a time to reassess relationships and values, retrograde Mars a time to reconsider where and why your energy for action is aimed. If a planet is retrograde in a person's natal chart itself, rather than only in a current transit, it's more often read as a character trait: that planet's energy expresses more introvertedly, through inner processing rather than immediate outward action. For self-knowledge, a retrograde is a reason not to panic over a "bad period," but to consciously set aside time for review and closure rather than for starting something new.
