Ruling Planet

Since ancient astrology, every zodiac sign has been assigned a ruling planet — a "master" whose nature is closest to the sign's own: Mars rules Aries, Venus rules Taurus and Libra, Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo, and so on around the wheel; modern astrology added Uranus (co-ruler of Aquarius), Neptune (Pisces), and Pluto (Scorpio) to the scheme. The ruler acts as the sign's "ambassador" elsewhere in the chart: to understand how, say, a Libra Ascendant actually shows up, you look not only at the sign itself but at where its ruler — Venus — sits in the chart and what aspects it forms. If a sign's ruler is strong (in its own sign, in easy aspects), that sign's theme expresses openly and easily; if the ruler sits in a difficult position, the same theme may play out through inner tension or a longer road. For self-knowledge, a sign's ruler is a way to go one level deeper than a simple "I'm a Libra, so I'm diplomatic": it shows the conditions under which that quality unfolds most fully, and where it lacks support.
