How to Find Out Your Human Design Type
What data the calculation needs
The bodygraph is built from three parameters: date, time, and place of birth. Time is the most sensitive of the three: the system calculates planetary positions twice — at the moment of birth (the conscious part, "personality") and roughly 88 days before it (the unconscious part, "design"). An error of even half an hour can change which centers are defined, and with them your type and authority. Here Human Design inherits the demands of natal astrology: like the Ascendant, the key elements of the chart depend on the exact minute. So the first practical step is to find your birth time: it is often recorded in maternity hospital paperwork, and sometimes parents remember it. No exact time is not a dead end. Calculate the chart for an approximate time and check whether the type changes within the possible margin of error: it often stays stable across several hours. If the chart does "jump," start with what does not depend on time and come back to refine it later.
The five types: a short map
The Generator is the most common type (together with Manifesting Generators — about 70% of people). Its core is a defined Sacral center, a source of steady, renewable energy. The strategy is to respond: wait for an external stimulus and react with a bodily response instead of initiating from the head. The Manifesting Generator has the same sacral motor plus a direct channel to the throat: speed, multitasking, the ability to skip steps. The strategy is the same — respond — but after responding it helps to inform the people around you about your moves. The Projector (about 20%) has no steady sacral resource but sees systems and people with unusual clarity. Its strategy is to wait for the invitation: recognition comes when your expertise is called for, not when you impose it. The Manifestor (under 10%) is the only type built to initiate. Its strategy is to inform those affected by its actions, so as not to gather resistance. The Reflector (about 1%) has all centers open and mirrors the environment. Big decisions deserve a full lunar cycle — roughly 28 days.
Strategy and authority: how your design decides
Type answers the question "how do I interact with the world"; authority answers "how do I make decisions." It is the second key element of the chart, and without it knowing your type remains theory. There are several authorities. Emotional: truth arrives after living through the emotional wave — no decisions at the peak, neither in euphoria nor in despair. Sacral: an instant bodily yes/no response to a direct question here and now. Splenic: a quiet, one-time intuitive impulse in the moment — easy to drown out with reasoning. Ego authority: what do I truly want, and what am I ready to commit resources to? Self-projected: clarity is heard in your own voice when you speak the dilemma aloud. Mental: understanding is born in conversation with trusted people. Lunar, in Reflectors: the decision matures over a full cycle. All authorities share one thing: the mind does not make the decision. The mind is a brilliant adviser and a poor decider — it can justify anything. Authority returns the choice to the body and to time.
Profile and centers: what else is in the bodygraph
Beyond type and authority, the chart contains a profile — a pair of numbers like 1/3 or 5/1 describing your life role: how you learn, how others perceive you, how experience reaches you. The twelve profiles are twelve scripts of maturing, from the "investigator-martyr" who learns through personal trial and error to the "heretic" onto whom others project the expectations of a savior. The nine centers of the bodygraph are either defined (colored in) or open. Defined centers are your constant nature — what works the same regardless of company. Open centers are places of sensitivity: there you absorb and amplify what belongs to others — emotions, pressure, ambitions. An open center is not a weakness but a school of wisdom: over time you learn to distinguish what in that place is yours and what was brought in. Do not try to grasp everything at once. Type, strategy, and authority carry about 80% of the system's practical value; gates, channels, and the finer points of profile make sense only after the basic level has been tested by life.
How to start the experiment
Human Design has an honest rule: take nothing on faith. The system is offered not for believing but for experimenting — usually a few months of observation in small things. Start by calculating your chart on the Human Design page — it is free. Then pick one low-risk area of life and test your strategy there. For a Generator: spend a week not initiating small tasks, tracking the response instead — "yes" feels like expansion and energy, "no" like contraction or fatigue. For a Projector: hold back unsolicited advice and notice how people's reactions change. For a Manifestor: inform those close to you before actions that affect them. For a Reflector: stop giving instant answers to big questions. Keep short notes: the situation, the decision made with or against the strategy, the result. In a month you will have not "faith in the system" but your own statistics — the only argument worth anything in self-knowledge.
Frequently asked questions
Often yes. Calculate the chart for several times within the possible margin of error: if the type does not change, you can rely on it. If it does change, try to find the time in maternity hospital records or ask relatives — and until then, hold your conclusions as a hypothesis.
None. The types are not a hierarchy but different ways of exchanging energy with the world. A Projector is not "weaker" than a Manifestor, and a Reflector is not "stranger" than a Generator. Problems come not from the type but from living against your own mechanics — a Projector imposing, a Generator initiating from the head.
No. The chart is calculated for the moment of birth and does not change during your life, just as a natal chart in astrology does not. What changes is the depth with which you understand and use your design. If online calculators show different types, the cause is an inaccurate birth time.
Astrology reads planetary positions directly — through signs, houses, and aspects. Human Design uses the same astronomical calculation as input but passes it through the I Ching and a chakra model, producing a bodygraph with types and strategies. They are different descriptive languages; many people use both as complementary.
It is the system's basic stance: do not believe — verify. You take your type's strategy and test it in small decisions for a few months, recording the results. If life gets easier, the knowledge works for you; if not, you have lost nothing but a few notes.
