Human Design authorities: how to make decisions
Why authority is not "intuition in general"
The advice "listen to yourself" is useless until you know where exactly to listen. Human Design answers concretely: your chart has a hierarchy of centers, and the deepest defined center becomes your authority — the point where reliable decisions are born for you specifically. This explains why borrowed recipes fail: "decide right away" harms an emotional person, "think it over for a week" harms a sacral one. Authority does not cancel the mind — it assigns it the role of adviser: gathering facts, analyzing options. But the final "yes" or "no" sounds not in the head, but where your chart keeps its truth. You can learn your authority together with your type in the Human Design calculator.
Emotional authority: truth after the wave
The most common authority is a defined emotional center. Its core rule: there is no clarity in the moment. The emotional wave lifts a decision to a peak of enthusiasm ("yes, let's do it!") and drops it into a pit of skepticism ("why did I ever agree?") — and neither point is the truth. Truth arrives after the wave: when the emotions have rolled through and a calm "yes" remains. So the practice of emotional authority is time: "give me a day, I'll answer tomorrow" is not weakness but precision. How long to wait depends on scale: a night is enough for small things; big decisions deserve several passes at different phases of the wave. If the "yes" repeats at the peak and in the pit alike — you can move.
Sacral and splenic: the body knows now
Sacral authority belongs to Generators and MGs with an open emotional center: an instant bodily answer to a here-and-now question. "Uh-huh" feels like expansion, an influx of energy, motion forward; "uh-uh" like contraction and heaviness. It works best with direct closed questions, so sacral people benefit from asking loved ones to phrase things as yes/no. Splenic authority is the quietest: a one-time intuitive flash in the moment, a whisper that does not repeat. It gives no arguments — just "something told me." The practice for both is speed: these authorities live in the present, and long deliberation smudges the signal. Trust is built on small things — what to eat, where to go; the body learns fast when it is heard.
Ego, self-projected and mental: will, voice, environment
Ego authority (the heart center) asks honestly and a little selfishly: "what do I want? what am I ready to invest?" For it, the right decision is one backed by genuine desire and resource, not duty. Promises without an inner "I want" are contraindicated for ego people. Self-projected authority hears truth in its own voice: until you say it aloud, you do not know what you think. The practice is to speak decisions out — to a living person or a voice recorder — and listen not to the arguments but to the tone: where the voice sounds free, there is truth. Mental authority (in some Projectors) needs an environment: clarity is born in conversations with a few trusted people — not for advice, but to hear yourself in resonance. For both, choosing the right listeners is essential.
Lunar authority: a decision ripens for a cycle
Lunar authority belongs to Reflectors — people with no defined centers at all. Their inner weather changes daily with the transiting Moon, so a momentary "yes" guarantees nothing: tomorrow the sky's map is different, and so is the feeling. The strategy for big decisions is a full lunar cycle, about 28 days: in that time the Moon passes through all the gates of the chart, and the decision gets seen from every side. The practice: set yourself a date "one cycle from now," and through the month note how your feeling about the option shifts — it is convenient to keep such notes alongside the lunar calendar. If after the full circle the "yes" is steady, it is real. Haste is the chief enemy of Reflector decisions.
The main trap: the mind impersonating authority
Every authority shares one enemy — mental impostorship. The mind brilliantly imitates any inner voice: rationalization poses as sacral response ("I've calculated everything, so the body agrees"), fear as intuition, others' expectations as desire. Telling them apart is simple: the mind always argues and hurries; authority states without proof and is never in a rush. A one-week practice: make small decisions only with your authority and log the results — what you decided, where the signal came from, how it turned out. Within a month you accumulate a personal statistic of trust, and big decisions stop being a leap into the dark. Authority is not mysticism — it is a muscle, and it grows with use.
Frequently asked questions
Only by calculating the chart — from your date, exact time and place of birth. Authority is defined by the deepest defined center in the bodygraph, so "recognizing yourself in a description" is not enough: the mind gladly recognizes itself anywhere. Build your chart in the Human Design calculator on the site and verify by experiment.
Win as much time as you can: even "I'll answer in an hour" beats an instant "yes." If someone pressures you, treat it as a warning sign: honest offers survive a night. As a last resort, run a minimal wave: mentally live through both the excitement and the skepticism about the option before answering.
Authority shows what is right for you now — but the signal can be misheard, especially early on, when the mind drowns out the body. That is why the experiment starts with small things: mistakes there are cheap, and the skill of discernment grows. Over time the "false positives" become noticeably rarer.
They work as a pair: strategy tells you how to enter situations (respond, wait for the invitation, inform), authority — how to make decisions inside them. The classic Human Design formula literally reads "strategy plus authority." Start with authority in small things, and strategy will follow naturally.
