Shadow Work
Shadow work is the practice of recognizing and accepting the repressed, uncomfortable, or denied parts of yourself instead of fighting them or projecting them onto others.
The concept of the "shadow" was introduced by psychiatrist Carl Jung: it's the side of a personality a person doesn't recognize as their own because it contradicts the image they want to have of themselves — anger, envy, a need for control, weakness. What's repressed doesn't disappear; it either surfaces in unexpected outbursts or the person "sees" it in others (classic projection — what irritates you most in someone else is often an unlived trait of your own). Shadow work is the practice of consciously bringing attention back to these parts — not in order to act from anger or envy, but to stop spending energy denying and hiding them. In practical terms, this looks like a daily question — "what irritates me most in this situation, and what might that say about me" — or working with symbols like Tarot cards, dreams, or recurring reactions, which often point directly to a shadow theme. For self-knowledge, this is one of the deepest levels of work: acknowledging the shadow doesn't make a person "worse" — quite the opposite, it restores wholeness and removes some of the automatic, unlived reactions.
