अनाहत Anāhata
Love, forgiveness, and compassion — for others and for yourself.
Anahata sits at the center of the chest and governs the balance between giving and receiving — love, warmth, forgiveness, and the compassion you extend both outward and inward. In daily life it shows up in whether you can accept a compliment as easily as you give one.
A steady heart chakra looks like caring for people without losing yourself in the process — showing up for others while still keeping enough left over for your own needs. It also shows up in how quickly resentment fades: forgiveness here isn't a grand gesture, it's just not carrying old grudges around all day.
When this center is strained, caring tends to run one direction only — outward, at your own expense — or it closes off entirely, guarding against being hurt again. Either way, the exchange that makes love sustainable, give and take, has stopped balancing.
Signs of balance
- ✦You can accept help and affection as easily as you offer them.
- ✦Old grievances fade instead of being replayed for years.
- ✦Caring for others doesn't mean disappearing yourself.
- ✦You can set a boundary with someone you love without guilt taking over.
- ✦Self-criticism has roughly the same tone you'd use with a friend.
Signs of blockage
- ✦Chronic over-giving, with your own needs quietly pushed to last place.
- ✦Difficulty accepting compliments, help, or affection without deflecting.
- ✦Holding onto old resentment long after the situation has changed.
- ✦A harsher inner voice toward yourself than you'd ever use on someone else.
- ✦Keeping people at a careful distance to avoid being hurt again.
Practices
Gratitude letter to yourself
Write a short letter thanking yourself for something specific from the past week — not an achievement, just an effort. Read it back once, out loud if you can. It's an unfamiliar but simple way to practice receiving warmth from yourself.
Hand-on-heart breathing
Place a hand flat on your chest and breathe slowly for one minute, feeling the rise and fall under your palm. The physical contact is a quick way to bring attention back to this center.
One boundary, kindly stated
Say one honest boundary to someone you care about, in a calm and kind tone. Practicing that combination — clear and warm — is what keeps caring for others from crowding out caring for yourself.
Release one grudge
Bring to mind one small, old resentment and silently say, 'I'm ready to put this down.' You don't need to resolve or excuse the situation — just notice you can choose to stop carrying it.
Affirmations
- «I give and receive love in equal measure.»
- «I forgive at my own pace, without forcing it.»
- «I offer myself the same kindness I offer others.»
